Many of us have small gardens which need to look attractive while meeting several purposes ranging from relaxing, to entertaining, to playgrounds for the children. With thoughtful design this can usually be achieved through balancing the location and setting of the borders, the plant selection and the time the client has available to maintain it.
A long period of interest in the planting is crucial to making the most of small gardens. I select plants with long flowering periods and plan carefully to achieve a succession of flowers from month to month. I combine these with plants that have attractive seed heads or berries and with grasses that provide architectural qualities in winter
