Formal Borders & Shady Places

Every garden has its challenges but formal borders need never be dull.  I like to use different colours, textures and flowering shrubs to create interest whilst maintaining year-round foliage.  For example, an old Yew hedge can be softened by training a climbing rose through it.  Mixing a collection of old variety scented roses with more informal planting can create a formal backdrop that is still pleasing on the eye and with the added benefit of interest from spring through summer and into the autumn

Shady areas don't have to be a problem but require careful plant selection to ensure that they can cope with the often very wet or very dry conditions. This is one of the parts of the design work that I find most rewarding; there is always a solution to those problem areas.  There are plenty of plants that are interesting and easy going to brighten up those dark little spots
